Located in the splendid Piazza Santo Spirito, Borgo Antico maintains a charm all its own.
It’s situated just a few steps from the Basilica of Santo Spirito, one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in Florence. Perhaps not everyone knows that in 1434 the responsibility of restoring of the church was given to Filippo Brunelleschi, the architect of the magnificent Cathedral dome, and that relatively few years later, Michelangelo frequented the basilica for the purpose of studying the anatomy of cadavers there. To thank the church for allowing him this privilege, Michelangelo left the church a wooden crucifix, still found in the church sacristy.
The bell tower, 70 meters (230 ft.) high, is the work of Baccio d’Agnolo.
Our outdoor dining terrace looks out upon this marvel and reveals all its splendor both in daylight and by night. In fact, in the evening, the piazza comes alive with a vivacity all its own, with its many bars and clubs, young people and civic events. Eating on the terrace is the perfect introduction to the local color of Florence.
But Borgo Antico allows its guests to opt for indoor dining as well. The restaurant, in fact, occupies the ground floor of a Renaissance building and reflects the typical atmosphere of the traditional Florentine trattorias.
The warm atmosphere inside Borgo Antico has been enriched by the choice of furnishings: wonderful “finds” from the past, as well as pieces more recently crafted by local artisans. Among the latter are our chairs, reproductions inspired by local churches.
The atmosphere that derives from these choices is warm and welcoming, perfect for a romantic dinner or a relaxing evening in the company of friends.
